Short bio

Dr Helen Drury has been at the heart of the national movement to improve maths teaching and subsequently subject teaching over the last decade. She founded Mathematics Mastery, and now leads across Ark’s subject programmes, which are designed to bring the best subject-specific research into Ark classrooms and beyond. She holds a PhD in education, has written several books on teaching and the principles of mastery and is a member of the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education. An experienced teacher and government advisor on curriculum and assessment, she is determined that every teacher should be empowered and equipped to give every young person the subject knowledge and skills that will allow them to succeed.

She founded Mathematics Mastery, the first AC+ subject excellence programme. Designed to empower teachers through professional development, assessment, curriculum and collaboration, the partnership now includes over 500 schools nationwide and has proof of significant impact from an Education Endowment Foundation randomised controlled trial. She now leads across Ark’s subject programmes, which are designed to bring the best subject-specific research into Ark classrooms and beyond. She holds a PhD in education, has written several books on teaching and the principles of mastery and is a member of the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education. Mastering Mathematics: Teaching to Transform Achievement

Mastering Mathematics: Teaching to Transform Achievement was published in 2014 as an introduction to teaching primary mathematics for mastery. The mastery approach is a teaching methodology that builds conceptual understanding, language and communication and mathematical thinking to problem solve effectively. Mastering Mathematics shares key principles of the mastery approach, drawing on the wide range of international research that underpins the approach and examples of the approach in action in UK schools.
